Tips and Tricks

There are so many terms thrown around the kitchen these days – who can keep up? We decided to make things easier! Here are a few popular baking terms and their definitions.

 

Cream: to beat one or more ingredients until the mixture is light and fluffy (generally sugar, butter, and/or egg(s))

Dash: a measurement of less than 1/8th teaspoon (a pinch)

Lukewarm: (generally referring to water) a temperature that feels neither hot nor cold, but no warmer than 105˚F

Mix until just combined/ moistened: To combine wet and dry ingredients until the dry are completely moistened, but the batter is still a bit lumpy

Softened: a state in which the butter, ice cream, or margarine is soft enough to easily combine, but not yet melted

Whip: to beat very quickly with a whist or electric mixer, adding air into the mixture (thus increasing the volume)
